3. LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE: READING COORDINATES

Grid lines are the lines of latitude and lines of longitude. They show exactly where places on the map are.

The vertical coordinate tells us the latitude.
The horizontal coordinate tells us the longitude.

Reading Coordinates:

Imagine that we want to find the coordinates of Murcia:

1rst: For the latitude, look at the vertical coordinate. Murcia is at 38ºN latitude.
2nd: For the longitude, look at the horizontal coordinate. Murcia is between 1ºW and 2ºW longitude. It is about 1.2ºW.

So, the coordinates of Murcia are: 38.0ºN, 1.2ºW.

REMEMBER!

THE LATITUDE IS ALWAYS BEFORE THE LONGITUDE.

Exercise

Fill in the table with the coordinates:

PLACE LATITUDE LONGITUDE
Madrid

Bilbao

Barcelona

Almería

2. PLANETARY MNEMONIC: ORDERING THE PLANETS

A planetary mnemonic is a phrase used to remember the planets of the Solar System. It is an easy way to remember the order of the planets from the Sun:

1. WHY IS PLUTO NO LONGER CONSIDERED A PLANET?

Pluto is not one of us.

Since its discovery in 1930, Pluto has been a bit of a puzzle:
In August of 2006 scientists at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided that Pluto's planetary title would be removed, and it would be labeled as a dwarf planet.
The reasons are:
  • It's smaller than any other planet - even smaller than the Earth's moon.
  • It's dense and rocky, like the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars). However, its nearest neighbors are the gaseous planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune). For this reason, many scientists believe that Pluto originated elsewhere in space and got caught in the Sun's gravity. Some astronomers once theorized that Pluto used to be one of Neptune's moons.
  • Pluto's orbit is erratic. The planets in our solar system all orbit the Sun in a relatively flat plane. Pluto, however, orbits the sun at a 17-degree angle to this plane. In addition, its orbit is exceptionally elliptical and crosses Neptune's orbit.
  • One of its moons, Charon, is about half Pluto's size. Some astronomers have recommended that the two objects be treated as a binary system rather than a planet and satellite.
Therefore, instead of being a planet, Pluto is a dwarf planet. Dwarf planets orbit the Sun, are nearly round, have NOT cleared its orbital neighborhood, and does not orbit any other body (not a satellite).

 ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
  1. How many planets were in the solar system before 2006?
  2. Who decided that Pluto is no longer a planet?
  3. What are the four main reasons that tell us Pluto is not a planet?
  4. What is Pluto considered now?
  5. What are the main features of drawf planets?
